What is it? Search Engine Optimzation (SEO) is a process that improves your website’s visibility in search engines. It improves your site’s ranking in a search engine’s natural or “organic” search result. This, in turn, can help improve the volume or quality of traffic to your site. In other words you’re making sure your site is “search engine-friendly”.
How does it work? This is a little difficult to explain in plain English, but I’ll try. It’s a lot of math and science, which is definitely not my forte. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and most recently Bing, “crawl” the internet looking for content. They index web pages and rank them according to very complex algorithms. Once a search engine finds content, it ranks it so that the most relevant information for a particular search comes up at the top of the list. Recently I sat in on an SEO webinar and they mentioned that “over 500 different signals are considered when deciding how to rank a website”. All in under a nano-second. Amazing, huh?
There's so much to optimizing a website that it'd be difficult to explain it all in the Client Corner. Content, inbound links, your HTML code - they all come into play and I'll leave it to Zuno's SEO specialists to dive into all of that in a future blog post.
Why should you use it? SEO alone cannot guarantee you sales. However, the more traffic you get to your website, the better chance you have to turn those visitors into clients. Make SEO a part of your marketing plan, but don’t count on it to do all the work for you. Also, we’ve spoken a lot about social media in the past few weeks and combining your SEO and social media efforts is key to online success.
